Answering some Questions

While I'm here, I'd also like to take this opportunity to answer some questions I've received about Pack of the Dead and what's in it...

How Many Zombies do I need for Pack of the Dead?

I'd recommend about 20-30, plus the Special Zombies if you're using them.  While there's no upper limit to how many Zombies are in a game of Pack of the Dead, the Zombies themselves are split into "Mobs".  To make a Mob, just put 3-6 Zombies on a single base or Movement Tray, and place a dice or tracker next to them with the "actual" number of Zombies - saves you from running out!

Can this game still be played on a small table?

Yes - in fact, I'd recommend it.  If the Zombies are too far away to hurt anyone, it might be a bit too easy!

How Advanced are the rules to Pack of the Dead?

They're pretty simple, using the original Packing Heat rules but with a new Cut system that lets the Zombies have their Turn.  Of course, as these are additional rules for Packing Heat, a little experience with the original is recommended but not required.

How much of a threat are the Zombies?

The short answer: it's between you and the dice!  The "standard" Pack of the Dead rules provide a decent challenge for most scenarios, but if you find yourself struggling you can use the game's optional Easy Mode rules, and if you want a bigger challenge you can use the optional Hard Mode rules and/or Special Zombies.

And what are the Special Zombies?

There are six types of Special Zombie, each one a unqiue rotter with their own strengths and weaknesses:

  • Z-Dogs: A small Mob of infected Dogs - very fast!
  • Juggernaut:  A heavily armoured Zombie - hard to kill, but slow!
  • Acid-Spitter:  Has a devastating ranged attack, like the name suggests!
  • Lardy:  Big fella that explodes on impact!
  • Slither-Tongue:  Has a long, sticky tongue that pulls you towards it!
  • Titan:  The biggest, strongest Zombie.  If you end up with this one...well, good luck!

The Special Zombies are entirely optional, but I thought I'd add them to add some variety and encourage the creative modells are painters in our midst to try some kitbashing!

Is Pack of the Dead a standalone game?

No - Pack of the Dead is an Expansion for Packing Heat and still needs a copy of Packing Heat's core rules to play.  However, this means it's compatible with all Settings and Factions from the original Packing Heat!  Hell, you can even combine Pack of the Dead with other full-size expansions like Pacific Heat if you'd like.

Can I use the Pack of the Dead Factions in Packing Heat without Zombies?

Absolutely!  "The Apocalypse" is treated as an additional setting for Packing Heat, with archetypal "Apocalypse Survivor" Factions.  While they're designed for Pack of the Dead, there's nothing stopping you from playing regular Packing Heat with them!

Those Factions are as follows:

  • Survivors:  Mostly normal people trying to survive the Apocalypse, with a few Hero-types mixed in (this wargame is based on action movies, after all!).  They have a Squad Morale bonus as well as the most variety in weapons.
  • Raiders:  Angry punks who use the Apocalypse as an excuse to wreck stuff, Raiders are very aggressive and love to bash people in Melee.
  • Cultists:  Fringe zealots who follow "the Chosen One" into battle.  While the Chosen One is alive, losing Squad Members doesn't matter as much, but losing the Chosen One can cost you a ton of Squad Morale!
  • Stalkers:  Scavengers living in the most dangerous parts of the wasteland.  Very fast and sneaky!
  • Black Ops:  Shady Government agents with plans you couldn't even imagine.  They're very well-trained and well-armed, but very expensive.

Oh, and one more thing...

Here's some good news, especially for our European players - Caliver Books will soon start stocking Packing Heat books, and they can send copies to Europe, VAT and Handling Free!

That's all for now, see you soon!
